Alright, so in my last post featuring my digital ink of a Cole McGrath sketch I mentioned that there were 2 other versions of Cole, a good and an evil version. I had a lot of fun using the gradient mesh and I wanted to get some more practice so I went ahead and made the good and evil versions. However, there isn’t a huge difference, just small changes that help differentiate which version is which.
First, I made the “good” version of Cole; because that version where’s a white shirt I actually had some trouble trying to figure out which tones to use. Most of the ones I used originally were barely noticeable making the highlights and shadows insignificant. So I had to experiment a little to get it right.
I took this into consideration when colouring the patch on the left leg, instead of just leaving it white I made it a light grey so the shadows and highlights were more distinguishable.
Just as a subtle change I made his eyes blue and highlighted his hair a bit better.
This was the finished product.
Next I worked on the evil version; the differences in this one are more noticeable.
Nothing much really changed with the clothing though. The shirt, pants and shoes were changed in order to match the evil version of Cole. However, in all the reference pictures I looked at the evil Cole had numerous tattoos and details that just made him look menacing. I couldn’t (and didn’t) change any artwork because it belongs to the original artist whom was mentioned in my previous post; I’m just doing the inking and colouring. Regardless I still wanted him to look more threatening. To do this I gave his skin some greyish tones, mostly on the face and a little on the arms, then I made his eyes really red. I didn’t make a lot of changes, but I like how it turned out.
Here is the final product.
Just for the heck of it I also made a side-by-side comparison of all of them just in case anyone wanted to see them all at once.
Anyways that’s pretty much it, hope you enjoyed it and hope you had a really awesome holiday!
So today I joined instagram so to celebrate I decided to recreate their logo in illustrator. Here is the final product; I’ll post my process in a little bit.

This is probably one of the best projects I’ve every had to do; make a skateboard design. My only restriction was that whatever I chose as my topic had to be made to look like advertising from the 50’s or 60’s. I sketched out a bunch of different idea’s (which will be posted later after I get my scanner working again). My ideas ranged from a Monster’s University parody, a GTA type design, an Avengers design and much more but I decided to go with a Star Wars theme.
There actually was another restriction I forgot to mention. I had to create a photo asset; because I was going with a simple space scene I thought it would look a little boring if the only thing in my background were stars. To remedy this I took out a DSLR and set it to continuous shooting, next I took a glass full of water and poured milk into it and got this really cool shot that kind of looks like a nebula. I first used coffee and milk but it wasn’t as clear so I decided not to use it.
This is the result after some quick erasing in Photoshop.
I also needed to create more assets as my focus for my design was the Mellenium Falcon in the middle, a quote describing it from the movie, and then a Rebel Alliance theme on the top of the board and an Empire theme on the bottom; to create the following assets I did some research on some easy designs and pictures that I could use to recreate in illustrator. Thank you Google and Dragoart. (< Great site for learning some simple drawing techniques).
To go along with my Rebel and Empire themes I grabbed a few vector files of their respective logos
Here is my finished board.
After finishing my design in illustrator my professor got all of our files printed off so we could mount them. Unfortunately I was unable to take video of my sanding my board or mounting my design because of camera issues but I still have pictures of the finished product. I’ll be adding more to this post later. I really want to get this post up because my internet has been cutting out very frequently today.
